The modest maxi dress is popular for a reason.

It gives coverage, it is easy to wear with hijab, and it solves a lot of outfit questions quickly. For summer, especially, it makes sense. One dress, one hijab, simple shoes, done.

But sometimes the usual long dress silhouette starts to feel a little predictable. For sure 😉

I had actually been searching for tunics, because a tunic over leggings is one of the easiest modest outfit formulas. But most of the tunics I found were not doing anything especially interesting. The shapes felt familiar, and I wanted something with more movement.

So the search moved towards shorter dresses and midi dresses instead, with the idea of wearing one almost like a tunic over leggings.

That is how this outfit came together: a black floral asymmetric dress worn over leggings, styled with a lilac hijab, black loafers, sunglasses and a classic shoulder bag.

It still gives the coverage of a modest summer outfit. It still feels easy to wear. But the shape has more movement, and the styling feels sharper than the standard maxi dress formula.

Wearing a dress over leggings is one of the simplest modest styling ideas, especially when the dress has an asymmetric or high-low hem.

The leggings make the outfit practical and covered, while the dress keeps the look soft and feminine. Because this dress has a longer, uneven cut, the layering feels intentional rather than like an afterthought or a fix for modestwear.

That is what makes this modest outfit work. The floral dress is still the main piece, but the black leggings give it structure. They also make the outfit easier to move in, which matters for everyday summer dressing.

For hijabis, this kind of layering can be useful when a dress has the right shape but needs more coverage around the legs. Instead of ignoring the dress completely, leggings can make it wearable in a more modest way.

How to make a shorter dress work for modest style

The asymmetric hem is the detail that gives this outfit its shape.

A straight maxi dress can look beautiful, but it often gives one long line from shoulder to ankle. This dress does something different. The uneven hem creates movement and makes the outfit feel lighter, even though the base colour is black.

It also gives the floral print a more current feeling.

Floral dresses can easily lean traditional, especially when they come in longer cuts and darker prints. Here, the asymmetric shape keeps the look from feeling too static. It adds a small edge without making the outfit complicated.

That balance is what makes it a good modest summer outfit: covered, wearable, but still visually interesting.

Styling a modest floral dress with hijab

The lilac hijab was the piece that tied the outfit together.

Because the dress has cooler blue and purple floral tones, the hijab did not need to match exactly. It only needed to connect to the print. A soft lilac shade brings out the flowers and makes the black dress feel more seasonal.

With printed dresses, the hijab choice can change the whole mood of the outfit. A black hijab would make the look stronger and more dramatic. A beige hijab would soften it. The lilac sits somewhere in between: still calm, but with enough colour to feel fresh for summer.

The rest of the styling stayed simple.

Black loafers keep the outfit grounded and practical. They make the dress feel more city-ready than sandals would. The classic shoulder bag adds structure, and the sunglasses keep the look clean without needing much jewellery.

This outfit works because each piece has a clear role.

The floral dress gives the look movement.
The leggings make it modest and practical.
The lilac hijab connects to the print.
The loafers and shoulder bag make it feel polished.
The asymmetric hem gives the outfit its edge.

That is the difference between simply covering a dress and actually styling it.

A modest summer outfit does not always have to be built around a maxi dress. A shorter or asymmetric dress can work well when it is layered properly and balanced with the right accessories.

Modest summer outfit ideas for everyday wear

This is the kind of look that works for a summer city day, a casual lunch, a museum visit, a relaxed family gathering, or an everyday outing where you want to feel put together without being formal.

It has enough coverage for modest dressing, but it still feels light enough for the season. The floral print brings in softness, while the black accessories keep everything more structured.

It is also a useful idea for anyone who has a dress they like but does not wear often because the length feels difficult. With leggings, loafers and a hijab that connects to the print, the dress becomes much easier to style modestly.

A modest summer outfit alternative to the maxi dress

This outfit is a reminder that modest summer dressing can still have shape.

The maxi dress will always have its place. So will the abaya and the matching co-ord set. They work, and sometimes they are exactly the right answer. But when the same modest outfit formulas appear everywhere, they can start to feel a little tired.

For this look, the combination of florals, black accessories, lilac hijab and loafers made the outfit feel easy, modest and current.

A simple alternative for days when the usual maxi dress is not the answer.

How to recreate this modest summer outfit

To recreate this modest summer outfit, the formula is simple: start with a floral asymmetric dress and wear it over black leggings for coverage. Add a chiffon hijab to pick up the tones in the print, then keep the accessories classic with loafers or ballerinas, slim sunglasses and a structured shoulder bag.
